Dr. Blaise Gassend is a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Waymo, working on short range Lidars for self-driving cars. He holds a Diplome d’Ingenieur from Ecole Polytechnique in France, and an MSc/PhD from MIT. His MSc research at the intersection of security and computer architecture, including co-inventing the Physical Unclonable Function, has led to several test of time awards. Dr. Gassend has also worked on GHz repetition rate Ti:Sapphire lasers, microfabricated electrospray thrusters and various robotsrobots. At ISDC2025 he is returning to the field space elevators after a 20 year hiatus, looking at power transmission to climbers via mechanical waves.
